“I thought we were headed THIS way.”

I have traveled almost one million miles in the air, and over one million on the ground. Sometimes we drive, but many times we rely on someone else, right? We trust the pilot of the aircraft, or we trust the commuter train engineer. We have to trust all those other drivers on the slabs of concrete and asphalt with us, don’t we?

Here’s a question: does everyone know where they’re going? I am sure some do. But others are lost and are trying to make up by making good time! Do you know where you’re going?

February’s blog spoke about moving over and letting God drive. It takes effort to do that. Sometimes, we KNOW we should do that. But instead of surrendering, we end up deciding to “ease into it”. We think we are obedient if we simply make the decision to go in that direction, instead of making the decision to completely follow! It’s like God telling us to stop and “go” a certain direction. But instead of actually going, we simply turn and face that direction. Instead of letting God have the wheel, we select someone else to do the driving for us. They might be believers, they might not.

We lull ourselves into thinking that giving the driving responsibility to someone else is OK. We sit on the passenger side along the road of our lives, and might decide to take a quick snooze. But when we wake up we realize where we are, and feign surprise that this is NOT where we expected to be! Yet we KNEW we put our trust in someone else. We thought it was a good decision at the time. And when we look back, it was obvious that we made a mistake in trusting anyone except God.

Leaders do the right thing
Chuck Proudfit has a desk monument at the At Work On Purpose executive roundtable office that says:
“Managers do things right, while leaders do the right thing.”

God is THE leader and sees all the hazards in our future. We need to work with people, but we need to trust in God.

Dr. Stephen Covey had a great saying we should be aware of. He spoke about managing loggers, who were efficiently clearing a swath through the forest and didn’t want to be interrupted. The problem was that the leaders had been telling them that it was the WRONG forest.

Proverbs 3:5-7. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean NOT unto your own understanding. In all ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes, fear the Lord and depart from evil.”

WHO are we listening to?

“Lord, guide us with Your hand on the roads through this maze in this life. In Christ’s Name. Amen.”
